Unconventional resources require significant energy/material being injected into the reservoir for stimulating its production. How to manage the injection for stimulating a maximum reservoir volume directly affects well production and reservoir recovery. Meanwhile, the caprock and well hardware is impacted inevitably for its containment role while the reservoir is stimulated. If not managed properly, the containment integrity may be breached, causing significant societal and environmental damage. Therefore, a delicate balance must be sought between reservoir stimulation and its containment. These challenges for better financial performance and societal responsibilities call for new formation characterization tools, new stimulation technologies and new monitoring strategies. It is our belief that geomechanics, a branch of engineering science that deals with rock deformation and fracturing, can play an important role. Our experience has shown this is true.
